The public didn’t know much about Meghan Markle‘s mother, Doria Ragland until Meghan and Prince Harry married this year, but it was clear on the royal wedding that Meghan and her mother have a special connection.

Doria gave birth to Meghan when she was 24

Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland got married in 1979. They met in the 1970s, while Thomas was working as a light director a studio while Doria was working as a temp. “I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques,” Meghan Markle said in a letter to Elle. “Whatever it was, they married and had me.” In August 1981, Doria gave birth to their only daughter, Meghan.

Divorce

When Meghan was only six years old, Doria decided to divorce from Thomas. Meghan was raised by both parents, but she was much closer to her mother. Thomas had two children from his previous marriage, and Meghan is Doria’s only child. Meghan said that she picked some of the things her both parents had. Her love for yoga comes from Doria, and her career as an actress is connected to her father.

She doesn’t get to see her daughter as often as she wants too, since Meghan is now living in London, and Doria is in LA, but she is expected to visit Meghan sometime in spring. Meghan is supposed to give birth to her and Harry’s child at that time, and Doria will probably come and stay for a while, so she can help Meghan when her baby arrives.
