5 Movies That Were Just Too Different Than The Usual Cinema
Talk to any cinephile, and you will find that for people, movies mean different things. For some, it is more about keeping themselves entertained, and so they go for action thrillers and romantic comedies. For many, the film must have a message. For a few others, the movies must show depth and intricate emotions. Some people like comedies, some like art movies, and some prefer to watch documentaries rather than spending bucks on a film for masses.
We all like different things and moviegoers have a bunch of categories they like to watch.
There is one point that most moviegoers agree on, cinema provides an escape from real life; it mesmerizes people into forgetting their worries and let them enter a virtual world. That is one reason why people love storytelling so much.
Ask any moviegoer, and they will tell you about one movie that was unlike any other they had ever watched. We all have that one movie we watched that was unlike any other.
Here are 5 of those names:
- A Clockwork Orange – Calling this movie ‘controversial’ is as understating as it could get. Set in a dystopian future, it shows four gang members going on a spree of violence and sexual assault leading a delinquent life with little regard for the consequences of their actions. When the leader of a gang member is arrested for murder, he undergoes a technique that leaves him cowering even if he thinks of attempting any kind of assault. What confuses the viewer is the ending of its movie. It is a grueling story and a reflection of dystopian Britain. The movie was later withdrawn from release in Britain in 1973, due to the crimes that were occurring with the exact same nature as portrayed in the film. The film was nominated for several academy awards and is still termed as a classic.
- Dogville – This movie defines the words – experimental and bold. When it was released, the movie divided opinions among critics but since then has gone on to be mentioned in several lists of ‘best movies of the decade.’ The movie depicts a woman running away from her gangster father, and reaching a small American town called ‘Dogville.’ The people of the town are shown to be good people, at first, but start acting differently during the woman’s stay. It shows how sometimes in life, people aren’t what they seem in the first place and how society treats someone with lesser social status.
- AntiChrist – Another movie on the list by Lars Von Trier, this one is frequently termed as one of the most disturbing movies. The movie starts with a couple having sexual intercourse, while their child steps out of the crib and falls off the open window. After the incident, the couple goes off to a cabin in the woods; the aftermath of all this starts from brutal and keeps getting worse. Von Trier is a well-known Danish director and has several films that keep stirring controversy. Eric from CDR-Report terms it as one of the ‘morbidly disturbing, and a class apart.
- Mulholland Drive – Directed by David Lynch, an acclaimed director of movies like ‘Blue Velvet’ and ‘The Elephant Man,’ this is termed one of the greatest movies of all time by many critics and in numerous lists. Mulholland Drive starts with a car crash on the drive, a woman is the sole survivor of the crash who goes on to walks off and enters an apartment. The movie has several parts in which the viewer just could not get the meaning of it, which includes the open-ended ending as well. However you may take the movie, it piques the interest throughout the run-time and will keep you hooked.
- Room – This movie is made of compelling screenplay and performances, portraying a story that is harrowing and still manages to be humane. A woman is kidnapped and raped repeatedly in a room, two years later she gives birth to a child. As the child grows up, he is made to believe that the room is the only world that exists and whatever he sees on television is not real. One day the woman and her child ploy to escape from the room, and they do so successfully. Most screenplays would have ended here, telling this part of the story would have been enough to keep the viewer satisfied and maybe some would have even shed a tear. “What makes the writing brilliant is, that it goes on to build on the story and let us watch what should have been a ‘happily ever after.’ A gem for the collector” – opines Monica from OnlineAssignmentWriting.
