9 Stars Who Lost Custody Of Their Children

When a couple decides to split, it simply can’t go without some drama arising. This is especially true if the couple involves a celebrity, and we’ve already experienced a watershed of celebrity splits. Probably the ugliest part of the divorce process is the fight for custody of their kids. In fact, there are a vast number of stars who have gone through such hell. So, we decided to present you 9 starts whose custody battles took a major turn for the ugly.

9 Celebrities Who Lost Custody of Their Children

Sharon Stone

After Sharon Stone divorced from Phil Bronstein, they went on the court who will have the custody of their adopted son Roan. At first, the court decided that the two share “joint legal and physical custody”. However, their son attended school near his father in San Francisco. This made Stone work on an appeal to modify the order as she considered it was better Roan to live near her in Los Angeles. Nevertheless, Stone lost custody as Bronstein provided a more secure and stable home for the child.

Kim Delaney

You probably know her as a detective on NYPD Blue, but in real life, Delaney had huge law issues. In fact, in 2002, she was arrested on drunk driving charges. The worst part was that she wasn’t alone in the car but with her then-15-year-old son. So, three years from the incident, she fought for custody of her son. Unfortunately, even her son testified against her and admitted that that’s not the only instance of his mother being drunk. So, the judge issued custody to Delaney’s ex-husband.

Harvey Keitel

Keitel was part of, what became known, one of the more complex custody cases in Hollywood history. Keitel fought for custody of his and Lorraine Bracco’s daughter, Stella. Keitel’s drug use and violent outbursts just worked against him and Bracco got the custody. Sadly, the story didn’t end here. In his next plea for custody, Keitel accused Bracco’s husband, Edward James Olmos for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. The allegations were rejected as unsubstantiated but the judge ordered that Olmos should never be alone with Keitel’s daughter.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears hit the headlines over and over again during 2007 and 2008, and it was all for the wrong reasons. Besides her fall from grace, Spears also lost custody of her two sons to her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. What’s more, she was ordered to undergo various drug testing. Kevin Federline still has custody of their children and he gets thousands more for child support besides the arranged $20,000 a month.

John Heard

John Heard battled for custody of his and Melissa Leo’s son. In fact, the battle lasted no more than 10 years. However, when he was arrested for assaulting Leo, he lost every chance of getting custody. He was also granted court-approved visitation rights to his son, which meant that he mustn’t appear on his son’s school’s property. What’s more, his visits to his son are extremely restricted.

Courtney Love

Courtney Love fought for custody of her and Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean. The battles lasted for years. After a potentially deadly evening for Courtney Love, which involved going to jail for smashing windows at a friend’s house and drug overdose, a temporary custody was given to Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor. After one year, Love regained custody, but in 2009, she again lost the custody. The guardianship of a then-17-year-old Frances Bean was given to Kimberly Dawn Cobain, Cobain’s sister. In fact, Love also received a prohibited order for contacting her daughter.

Jennifer Hudson

The singer Jennifer Hudson lost custody of her son as the court granted the father, David Otunga, a temporary custody. This decision of the judge wasn’t a surprise as Otunga, professional wrestler, looked after their son most of the time as Hudson was extremely busy. In order to gain custody, Hudson even accused Otunga of domestic violence. However, he was never charged and Hudson still tries to win back custody in the lengthy case.

Kelly Rutherford

Kelly Rutherford went through a rough custody battle. The court gave the custody to the father, Daniel Giersch and the two children were allowed to stay with their father in Monaco. The main reason was that Rutherford could afford to travel between countries while Giersch was unable to return to the United States. Nevertheless, when the children were on summer holiday in the USA, Rutherford decided not to return the kids to Monaco with an excuse that a judge in California gave her sole custody. However, the court didn’t have jurisdiction in the case and she had to return them to their father. This only led to her losing the custody.

Woody Allen

Probably one of the ugliest custody battles in Hollywood was the one between Woody Allen and Mia Farrow. As Woody was accused of being too self-absorbed and insensitive, Mia Farrow got custody of their three children. In fact, his visitation rights to Dylan Farrow, their adopted daughter were also restricted as he was accused of sexual abuse. Even though these charges were dropped, his visitation rights to all three children remained restricted. Although he vowed to appeal the decision, he lost.
